Afraid Of The Dark

My dear, I see it in your heart,
You’re tired and crave the light
like a child for their mother.
I know your pain because I’ve been there
and I’m there still.
Tired
and afraid of the dark.

But I trust your head and your heart
fighting
like siblings, but hold them close and let it be known.
You need them together to guide you in this stage
we call the world.

Hush now and listen to the song of the birds,
so
sordid and sweet,
but hopeful of the bright bay.
So, the sun rises
on the breast
of a new day,

alive and burning bright with pride as it banished
the night once again.
You’re back home to rest and yesterday is but a dream,
a distant memory of something bittersweet. Now
dangling
between
the edges of a dream and reality.

And when the sun dims and the moon
forgets to coddle your heart, I’ll be there,
to shine on you, a ghost of your past; your friend.
I’ll strike a match until the sun glints again
on our skin, scorching and bright like the hope
that resides in our heart.

It’s okay to be afraid of the dark.

-Pollyanna Halcyon
I wrote Afraid of The Dark during a very stressful day where it felt like I was stuck in perpetual darkness. It is a poem about those days where you feel tired, and scared- as if there is no end to what you're going through and everything feels hazy. I want my future self (when she's in the darkness again) and other readers to know that the sun will rise again to banish our pain away. Darkness is temporary, and it will pass.
